Cast iron can take the heat and the thicker the casting the better. Cracking will occur from
the heat expanding and contracting. Liberty foundry makes a cast iron grate that uses
cast sections bolted together. This allow for expansion without stress on the iron.

Steel bar stock grates the thicker the bar stock the better. Heavy bar stock welded
together with last a long time.

Andirons. Yes andirons are very popular grates. The wood lies on the long arms and is
supended in the middle. Cleaning out the ash is simple with no heavy grates to lift and
sweep under.
